Regarding the evolution-exchange angle, I should say that ever since I've stopped using the Exchange connector(*) I've never had a single incident of hanging with "Formatting Message" problem, on either Lucid or Maverick.
(*) I've started using a personal Zimbra installation that is synced with the company's Exchange account.
