I have to retract my last observation. It happened again today on Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits.
The strange thing is that the standard cpu panel indicator is giving a 50% (=100% of one cpu) reading and the systemmonitor does not show anything in the cpu usage. The total machine is afterwards very slow. Starting the systemmonitor takes about 10 seconds and not 1 second. I had to kill open office and restart it.
