Just tested with completely new system in VirtualBox, first installed 9.04 (the install what my system is updated from originally) and updated to 10.04 and then to 10.10. It seems like the new kernel in 10.10 indeed causes the problem by using modules in kernel itself as opposed to modules before. Both, the module "lirc_mceusb" and plain "mceusb" show up on "lsmod | grep mceusb", so it seems like it loads both the old and new modules. The same thing happens with "lirc-modules-source" installed and removed.
