In Ubuntu 10.04 I could resolve this problem by installing kernel 2.6.31-rt from the repos, but since it isn't available anymore in 10.10, I am now stuck. Rebooting doesn't even help, I need to shutdown and start again, (reboot doesn't even work) although I have an Asus F3Ke with an AR5007eg card, lspci shows (even if it works fine): 07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
The funny thing is that I don't always have the problem. Just once every 3 or 4 bootups.
