I am under the impression that you have removed Network Manager and this has resolved you issue, is that correct? Network Manager will conflict with an interface that is configured in '/etc/network/interfaces' and your ath0 interface seems to be configured there. If you connect to multiple wireless access points I would recommend using Network Manager as it is easier to switch networks and setup new ones.
