I have a similar experience with a small difference. I have two SATA
drives, both are seen in BIOS but one is no longer available after I
upgraded to Maverick. So (if I have the drives connected in teh right
order, Ubuntu boots from GRUB but hangs at login, giving me teh option
to Wait, Skip or Manually fix the missing drive. If I skip, the boot
continues fine but of course I can't see the second drive at all, not in
GParted, not with fdisk -l..
