Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.35-22-generic

Since the upgrade to Ubuntu 10.10, I am encountering "stuttering" sound
playback every few minutes. It sounds like it plays some "time slices"
in the wrong order. Some slices (words, beats, etc.) are repeated,
others are dropped, and everything is mixed. This lasts for about 5
seconds, after which it continues normally.

Apparently, the sound card driver has undergone some changes since
2.6.32 and one of them may have caused this error.

When I start the 2.6.32 kernel remaining from the 10.04 installation,
everything is OK, so I'm pretty sure it's a kernel issue.

I usually play sound using mplayer, but increasing the cache size (the
usual suspect) doesn't help anything. PulseAudio probably "amplifies"
the effect. If I apply the option "-ao alsa" to mplayer, I still here
some "clicks", but they don't last 5 seconds.

The bad news is that I cannot really reproduce the problem: when playing
the same song several times, the problem sometimes occurs, sometimes
does not, but it never occurs in the same position of the song.

I'd be grateful for suggestions how to collect further information.
Everything above is merely based on memory and not from "scientific"
experiments.
