I also tried it, it does not work. Using apport 0.73 . Mozilla firefox
2.0.0.3+1-0ubuntu2
Steps to reproduce :-
1. Make sure Firefox is closed
2. Go to System > Preferences > Hardware Information
3. Click on Ubuntu Device Database
4. Let it do all the tests, at the last it will try to upload the results of
the database.
5. Eventually the hardware database client will crash
6. Apport will say if you want to submit the crash
7. Apport submits the crash data from /var/crash & exits silently
