With the latest file provided by Ralink, the 2010_0915_RT3572_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.2.tar.bz2 is corrupted somewhere, it returns:
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.35-22-generic' make: *** [LINUX] Error 2
at the end when doing 'make'. I noticed user Emory had the same problem with an earlier version of the file, but he managed to fix it and provide us with a working version from the older file (2010_0709_XXX). Got that to work, although the blacklisting part is important, otherwise the firmware will remain not to be found!
blacklist rt2800usb
did the trick in the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file
