Tried a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 on a dell precision M4500 with graphics card Nvidia Quadro FX 880M. The behavior is as described in #6. Suspend/resume works fine with non proprietary drivers. When desktop effects are enabled and the Nvidia 260.19.06 driver in installed the system does not resume after suspend. My conclusion is that in ubuntu 10.10 the problem should not be anymore at kernel level.
