Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mtools
Tried to reformat a mounted FAT USB 8GB flash drive (PQI U339) for FAT. Format ran long enough to wipe drive clean but left it unformatted. The drive could not be mounted in ubuntu 10.10 after the format error. Error reported was that drive capacity in total sectors was not a multiple of sectors/track. Suggested fix was to edit .mtoolsrc to add line "mtools_skip=1" - which will never happen for most ubuntu installs. Moreover this is technically a poor suggestion. If the error was worth reporting at all then it should not be covered up forever. Format of the same flash drive type on ubuntu 10.04 and earlier worked without error. Recovery was to format the drive FAT-32 on a Windows XP system. Drive then mounted correctly on ubuntu 10.10 and was used for writes and reads without any problems. ** Affects: mtools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Unable to format flash drive - ubuntu 10.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660233 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
