The hotfix driver doesn't support Ubuntu 10.10 yet. The 8.780 driver included in Ubuntu 10.10 does and it has the same workaround as the hotfix driver. Use the fglrx that comes with Ubuntu 10.10. This is the only driver that supports Ubuntu 10.10 until Catalyst 10.10 is release on amd.com.
