This just started happening to me in Ubuntu 8.04 randomly one day; The odd thing is that it doesn't seem to have happened with an update (or restart, this one just stays on); it just started happening! There shouldn't be some hotkey that could trigger this, but I don't know how it started happening otherwise. I is also driving me insane though!
