Sorry I had to get my hands on a Lucid LiveCD. Got that now, found my card, and
no, it doesn't lock the system.
However, the card continues to not work in my system. Should I downgrade to
8.04?

$ lshw -C network

  *-network UNCLAIMED
       description: Network controller
       product: ACX 111 54Mbps Wireless Interface
       vendor: Texas Instruments
       physical id: 8
       bus info: p...@0000:04:08.0
       version: 00
       width: 32 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: bus_master cap_list
       configuration: latency=32
       resources: memory:fdbfc000-fdbfdfff memory:fdbc0000-fdbdffff

The installer itself doesn't run on this system, whether or not the card
is in, but at least it lets get into the LiveCD/desktop.
