Argh! Got suspicious about the error in comment #7, so started digging around. Turns out the mirror I was using for updates was horribly out of date. Switched mirrors and got 1GB of updates, including a new version of gdm. This version has no problems. As far as I'm concerned, the bug I reported is invalid.
