Following happens by me with Ubuntu 10.4 with Empathy 2.30.2:
I've noticed that Empathy shows all the time that it's still trying to connect
(I have GT, ICQ and MSN accounts running) to one or more of the accounts. So I
opened the accounts manager, where you can also see if the connection via this
and that protocol has been established (since I hide my offline contacts this
is the only 100% sure way to find out; after all it might happen that noone's
online and you'll get a false impression that things are actually working). I
looked at ICQ and GT - in both a successful connection has been established.
With MSN things looked different. The status icon was blinking [connected <->
disconnected] that is - online status and offline status. It seems that Empathy
cannot establish connection and is repeatedly trying to reconnect. No error
messages at all.

PS: Guys, killing processes and/or deleting files isn't a normal
solution. It might "solve" the problem now but sooner or later it'll
come back and might be even worse.
