I just came across to see that there is a ubuntu-package for the proprietary-graphics-driver fglrx available. I gave it a try. The problem seems to occur less with this driver than with the open source radeon-driver. I got the system booted up with battery-power. And it generally worked fine disconnecting and reconnecting the AC-supply.
