@Jeff - Could you please try to replace the gimp_xcf.py file (save it first!) in /usr/share/inkscape/extensions/ with the one downloaded here: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/inkscape/RELEASE_0_48_BRANCH/annotate/head%3A/share/extensions/gimp_xcf.py Lots of bugs have been fixed recently (and maybe your one!).
