Hm. Running “vbetool vgamode” while using a kernel-modesetting driver like i915 is unlikely to do anything more useful than locking up your GPU - as you've found :).
It's going to prod GPU registers behind the back of the i915 driver, which will go merrily on assuming that it's the only thing driving the GPU, and then fall over when it prods the hardware in a (now) inappropriate way. I'm marking this as invalid.
