My problem got solved in a misterious way. After doing make uninstall, and reinstalling the "stock" VIA driver, it just works. I'm very curious about the nature of this problem, because I didn't ever mess with the VIA driver before.
Please notice, that I upgraded to feisty from edgy. Could it be a bug during the upgrade process which messed it up? I'm still not easy on the fact, that this annoying problem could (and did) completely hang up my system with the "optimized" version of stock kernel.
