I can also confirm the same problem. Lenovo ThinkPad T61 (Type 7663-13U) Running Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 LTS (up to date as of Sep. 23, 2009)
First observed problem after I updated to the latest version of 10.04 LTS earlier this week. Initially noticed a lot of lag, checked on top and found that events/0 was spiking. Both lights on the Ethernet interface were lit up. Downing eth0 stopped the spikes, although the ethernet lights remain on.
