I did reboot after the xserver packages, the kernel packages, the mesa graphics packages and everything you mentioned in posts 11 and 22.
Then I did a HUGE batch of updates all at once. I thought they were printing (CUPS) packages and Gnome games packages mostly. I figured those would be safe to upgrade and shorten the list. I must have ticked something else not intended and it was the broken package. I hope I can figure this out without having to install all 426+ packages one at a time and rebooting after each. If I must do that, I suppose I should get started soon.
