I have this problem too also using nVidia graphics. Have only been using the open source drivers. Will get this same freeze occasionally on my Lucid install too. I have tried changing BIOS settings with no prevail and have also turned compositing off and quit docky to see if it helps at all but still get the Freeze. System is 32bit and fully up to date as of 21 Sept. 10. Have been getting these freezes for a LONG time though. Probably somewhere since the start of Maverick. Will keep digging and try to find some logs or the problem.
