Affected too, i915 after the upgrade from 9.10, no plymouth in the initrd, no splash at bootup nor at shutdown. Reinstalling plymouth doesn't work, update-alternatives --auto default.plymouth says there is no default.plymouth.
Before trying the FRAMEBUFFER=y thing, is that workaround supposed to work? it seems that the issue is not in mode setting or framebuffer, it's plymouth that's not getting loaded at all.
