The following setting "Use this connection only for resources on its
network" is checked by default on Ubuntu 10.10 and it disables the
networking completely after connecting to the VPN server. I had no idea
why I was able to connect to the VPN server but I couldn't connect to
anything else after that. Un-checking the box (I assume it disables any
kind of split) restores the tunneled traffic.
