Hmmm... This is quite fishy, I can't reproduce it myself - I hope you
can help me a bit :-) From looking at XsessionErrors.txt  I'd say that
unity could not connect to any service over the session bus, which is
quite odd...

1) Which version of unity and unity-place-files are you running? Please
make sure you have the latest.

2) If you can still reproduce: try, in a normal Gnome session, to run in
a terminal '/usr/libexec/unity-files-daemon' and then in another
terminal 'unity -p'. If you can reproduce the bug there please attach
copies of the terminal output to this bug
