After messing around for another while, the internal mic works in the end.
What I have done is the following: 1.- Install latest ALSA driver according to http://monespaceperso.org/blog-en/2010/05/02/upgrade-alsa-1-0-23-on-ubuntu-lucid-lynx-10-04/ Microphone levels have to be raised after install, for instance wirh alsamixer 2.- Add following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf: options snd-hda-intel model=auto Step 2 made the difference. In Karmic Koala the line to be added was options snd-hda-intel model=m51a which apparently doesn't work in Lucid Lynx. Hope that this solution can be useful to whoever has the same sound card. May be step 1 is not necessary. -- Internal microphone doesn't work in ASUS M51V, Ubuntu 10.04.
