Enabling desktop-effects doesn't produce a crash anymore, after enabling the desktop-effects window that window becomes uncloseable until a short period of time where desktop-effects then disables by itself and then it can either be re-enabled or closed out.
so i don't get a crash report anymore but it certainly doesn't work for me.
