I see the same behavior on a fresh Lucid netbook install. Glipper is not installed.
The behavior also seems present in any standard file selection-style dialog (ie, choosing an icon for a launcher entry, hit CTRL-L to switch from the segmented buttons to text path entry, and begin typing the path).
