  It looks like the "experimental" branch of Grub makes this booting work,
  at least to where it sees the initramfs image.  Unfortunately, since I
  had to install (mkimage) Grub manually, it broke in other ways that
  don't happen with the packaged Grub.
  
  Note that my system is an HP EliteBook 8530w.
