I've been looking more into this and this is what I've done.

1) I uninstalled the fglrx package through "apt-get purge fglrx" ant
tried to start in low graphics mode. Still no progress.

2) I reinstalled the fglrx package through apt-get and noticed that it
failed to install "fglrx" and "fglrx-amdcccle".

3) I did a recovery boot and then a dpkg repair. The computer did a
massive upgrade. I noticed that it upgraded some "xserver-xorg-video-
ati" and "xserver-xorg-video-radeon" packages among others. It failed to
install "fglrx" and "fglrx-amdcccle" again.
