I get similar errors ( on a PowerBook G4 12-inch D.V.I. 1.5GHz with
nVidia graphics ) when attempting to access any functionality provided
by /usr/lib/hal/hal-system-power-pmu .

{
fr...@sancroft-1:~$ sudo /usr/lib/hal/hal-system-power-pmu setlcd 14
power-pmu : PMU_IOC_SET_BACKLIGHT failed
fr...@sancroft-1:~$ sudo /usr/lib/hal/hal-system-power-pmu getlcd
power-pmu : PMU_IOC_GET_BACKLIGHT failed
fr...@sancroft-1:~$ sudo /usr/lib/hal/hal-system-power-pmu sleep
power-pmu : PMU_IOC_SLEEP failed
}

When closing the screen starts a suspend operation , it fails with a
notice that suspend failed .

When I try hibernating ( since suspend is not present in any of the
Gnome menus ) the system powers down in an orderly fashion , but it
resumes to a black screen with no log entries visible after a restart ,
presumably because it never gets an opportunity to mount / read-write .
