@Gonzo - As you wrote of a "rock solid" 2.6.35-19-generic kernel in this
context, I switched from my recent 2.6.35-19-generic-pae kernel to your
non-PAE version, since I don't need PAE anyway. Both kernel taken from
the Maverick backports.

Observation: 
- 2.6.35-19-generic-pae crashes suddenly with Chrome running, "blinking caps 
lock syndrome".
- 2.6.35-19-generic took longer to crash with Chrome running, freezes hard, no 
"caps lock syndrome".

Both versions run stable when not using Chrome.

The machine in question is an IBM Thinkpad T41p with the ath5k driver
loaded for the Atheros WiFi.
