I have the same error happening in Kubuntu 10.04 (amd64) after upgrade from 9.10 and also after performing a fresh installation. Both of the installations were from the alternate CD: (process 373): GLIb-WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0)
The only solution is to hit CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot. Sometimes it takes two or three attempts to finally continue starting up.
