WORKAROUND: The font went crazy again, but this time I didn't reboot immediately. For no apparent reason, the font seemed to clear up a little after 5-10 minutes. Then, I changed the font from "subpixel smoothing" to "best contrast" and presto it fixed all the font immediately!!
Based on my experience, this never happens directly from bootup, and only seems to occur while using firefox (although I don't typically use other internet browsers).
