Running completely or just compiling? If it works now, I can upload a fixed 
package to
Debian and request a sync.

It's not obscure, it's the standard Debian way for building modules. This bug 
needs the
kernel fix I posted a few emails ago in order to be usable without m-a on an 
Ubuntu
machine running the default kernel.
