I am having the same issue on my machine (64 bit Core i3) with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I tried deleting and fixing the profile bu it did not help. In some situations, when firefox crashes it causes other programs to crash with segmentation fault such as synaptic and update-manager. In some other cases the whole desktop environment may crash or become extremely slow.
