It would help if network-manager & network-manager-gnome could be removed w/o removing ubuntu-desktop. So changing it to Recomends in the feeds would help. Note: this is already done for kubuntu-desktop and knetworkmanager - some HW is not supported by n-m and removal is the best fix.
