Is the issue still remains in ubuntu 10.04 and if you reproduce the error, we hope that will be great help to us... Not just reproduce, reproduce and also log the behaviour with the help of evetst output.. Switch to VT by pressing the key combination Alt+Ctrl+F2 and then after logging type this evtest dev/input/eventX >~/evtest for finding eventX, refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection and make sure that you log the output only when the touchpad behaves in unusual way..
