>From main menu, I went into System->Preferences->Keyboard (Layouts tab, click "Reset to Defaults") and now everything appears to be working fine. So it was my keyboard which inserted non breaking spaces when I pressed spaces! I don't know why it was set up like that but at least it is solved now.
