For me, the fix doesn't work. After starting alsamixer and choosing my external sound card (SB X-Fi Surround 5.1) it says "This sound device does not having any controls.". So pulseAudio seems to be the only way to control my sound card. But this isn't a problem of the new sound controls since karmic: I started my old jaunty installation and there are no controls (except the master) at the graphical mixer too.
