Okay, now this is interesting, according to gcc -v (I know I should have
included this in the report but I forgot,) I have 4.4.1. This appears to
be the most-recent version available in Karmic. (Am I wrong?) So this
might still be a bug in Karmic, and Karmic is still a supported distro.

I'd be happy to try upgrading GCC just to get the code to compile. The
thing is, I'm not sure if you can upgrade GCC without upgrading a
significant chunk of the whole GNU stack, which is kind of annoying and
will probably take me a while. I'm going to look for a PPA or something.
I'll work on that and report if it fixes the problem.
