Public bug reported: Binary package hint: beryl-manager
I think beryl-manager should be accessible from the GUI after installing. This can be accomplished by either starting up automatically (can cause problems if the card doesn't support 3d, like no window borders) or putting a "Beryl Manager" icon into the Freedesktop main menu, like the "Beryl Settings Manager" has today in System Tools. Also, I think the 'beryl' metapackage should depend on beryl-manager instead of recommending it. The reasoning is as follows: I've had a few problems with the 'beryl' metapackage and beryl-manager in Feisty Fawn's beta. Firstly Synaptic and apparently gnome-app-install don't install "recommends" by default so I couldn't start Beryl at all until I went onto the Ubuntuforums and asked how to start it. So I installed beryl-manager manually, but I still couldn't figure out how to start it up until I asked on the Ubuntuforums again. So, I think beryl-manager should either start up automatically (can cause problems if the card doesn't support 3d, like no window borders) or ---In the future, perhaps beryl-manager will disappear in favor of an applet like the compiz "Desktop Effects" (a mockup of Beryl's settings can be found here: http://www.osnews.com/story.php/17520/Creating-a -Sane-Beryl-Settings-Manager/ ), where we can configure and enable/disable it, but right now I think "no configuration, no command line, GUI approach" and therefore making beryl-manager accessible by a GUI is best for newbies. There is precedent for this in ubuntu, eg., the mythtv packagers have also done this by telling us all we need to know in a debconf screen and automatically adding the users to the 'mythtv' group/--- ** Affects: beryl-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- beryl-manager should either add an icon to the main menu, or start up automatically after installing https://launchpad.net/bugs/97707 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
