(Feisty) I have the same problem. It seems like it never probes my DDC/EDID properly. 1680x1050, 16:10 widescreen here.
Adding "1680x1050" to Xorg works, although it seems it should be auto- detected. nvidia-settings seems to be able to detect my resolution, and I was able to switch it on-the-fly despite 1680x1050 missing out of Xorg.conf. Attached is my monitor's EDID (binary data, 128 bytes). Also, here are all the modes it originally detected: SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh *0 1024 x 768 ( 433mm x 270mm ) *50 1 800 x 600 ( 338mm x 211mm ) 51 55 56 2 640 x 480 ( 270mm x 169mm ) 52 60 3 960 x 600 ( 406mm x 211mm ) 53 4 840 x 525 ( 355mm x 185mm ) 54 5 800 x 512 ( 338mm x 180mm ) 57 6 720 x 450 ( 304mm x 158mm ) 58 7 640 x 512 ( 270mm x 180mm ) 59 8 640 x 400 ( 270mm x 141mm ) 61 9 640 x 384 ( 270mm x 135mm ) 62 10 512 x 384 ( 216mm x 135mm ) 63 11 400 x 300 ( 169mm x 105mm ) 64 65 12 320 x 240 ( 135mm x 84mm ) 66 Just 'defaults' as far as I can tell. The next 4:3 resolution is 1280x960 and it didn't detect that for my 1680x1050 monitor.
