Thanks FD! A couple of quick questions to see if I can replicate your success under 10.10. Are you using the nVidia driver instead, or are you using the "somehow leftover" nouveau module resulting from after xserver-xorg-video-nouveau removal? Are you successfully running stable after the removal of that package under 10.04 or newer or is this still after your downgrade? Thank you for all your help, I now have a glimmer of hope that I may be able to finally migrate to my new machine!
