A year or so ago I had the same or very similar symptoms. From memory I resolved it by setting the boot parameter i8042.reset(=true?) That resets the i8042 keyboard controller subsystem at boot time.
You can set it in /boot/grub/menu.lst. I can't check further specifics now as the laptop suffered a terminal experience under the wheels of a car.
