I don't think this has anything to do with video drivers. It occurs randomly on some machines and always on others. The problem never occurs when 'quiet splash' is removed from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub (Thread on kubuntu-users: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2010-July/051527.html )
