I have the same problem. I tried enabling the cube effect through the Desktop Effects capplet, and now compiz segfaults when it starts. It functioned before without the cube effect enabled, but now it won't started even with the cube disabled. I'm not getting a report from apport, but here's what .xsession-errors says:
