If you're still there, from what I can see, if you run the latest code (that is, make sure there is no model=xxx option, then reinstall https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules , then reboot), it enables auto-switching, so if you plug the external mic in, it should automatically switch from the internal mic to the external mic.
