I too don't like the workaround, WM decoration is ugly. But on my laptop, I have a double boot with Dapper / Feisty. In Dapper 6.06, the status-plugin effectively makes the taskbar button disappear when XMMS is minimized and without WM decorations. So it used to work, and now it's broken. Maybe something changed with the WM api since then.
